The sun is shining, and the birds are singing. The kids are out of the house, soaking in the beams and living life. You have all the time in the world!

Why not use put this time to good use and pay attention to the little things around the house, like your chimney!

Once a beacon of warmth and happiness, your chimney has been through the wringer.

In 2019, the U.S. experienced its wettest winter in recorded history. And in 2020, nature turned the tide and gave us the warmest winter on record. Both weather conditions that did a number on your home structure.

So, this summer around, look out for the following problems in your chimney. And get in touch with Creative Masonry & Chimney if you see anything that needs fixing!

1. Structural Damage

Chimney Structural Damage

Is your chimney looking a little worse for wear? Extreme weather changes like excess humidity and dryness could be to blame.

Especially during humid seasons, water and moisture seep into the cracks of your chimney and erodes the material. And when the temperature goes below zero, the water freezes and expands, which opens up the cracks even more. This not only damages the mortar joints and chimney crown, but it also causes the structure to become loose and crumbly, which can be potentially dangerous.

Check the firebox for any broken flue tiles or efflorescence in the firebox or stains on the interior walls. These signs indicate structural damage.

2. Smelly Chimney

As the weather in Connecticut gets hotter, you will likely notice strange odors coming from your chimney. If the smell is excessive, i.e., you smell animal droppings, creosote and soot, you may want to have your chimney cleaned out thoroughly.

Creosote and soot can lead to deadly fires. Not to mention that if a small animal does die in your chimney, this causes a blockage, which leads to smoking backing up. If you notice any odors, a build-up, or blockage, have it seen to for assurance. You never know what might be stuck up there.

3. Storm Damage

Connecticut gets its fair share of storms and severe weather.

So, you can be sure that at one time or another, your chimney will fall victim to summer rainand high winds, both can cause significant damage to your chimney’s cap and flashing. If your area has seen enough storms to last a while, get up on the ladder and have a look at the chimney base and cap. If you see the cap damaged, or flashing warped, get in touch with us, and we’ll straighten it out.
